Winemaker Alex Beloz

Alex was born and raised in Chicago land area and graduated in 1995 in Civil Engineering from University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. He traveled to Italy for half a year after graduation from university, where he discovered wine appreciation returning home to explore careers in the wine industry. Alex then worked as an engineer while moonlighting as a wine retailer at one of the premier wine shops in the Chicago land area.

While working wine retail, Alex secured a harvest position for 1998 vintage at MacRostie Winery in Sonoma, CA. Allured to MacRostie for its reputation for making age-worthy Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs from Sonoma, he quickly moved from cellar hand to cellar master, finally becoming winemaker from 2001 to 2004.

In 2003 Alex married fellow winemaker, Jennifer Beloz, now director of winemaking at Ravenswood Winery.

After his six year tenure at MacRostie Winery, Alex decided to embark on a professional sabbatical working abroad in the wine industry to fill out his winemaking expertise with other varietals.  Travels took him to Bordeaux, France where he worked with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in 2004. In 2005 Alex worked in New Zealand with Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.  Finally, Alex traveled to Chile where he worked with Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.

Upon returning to California in autumn 2005 Alex accepted an enologist position with luxury-end Cabernet Sauvignon producer John Caldwell at Caldwell Vineyards in the Napa Valley. 2005 was also the nascent year of LAVORO.

In 2006 he was asked to join an up and coming wine company, Tricycle Wine Company, as winemaker for three successful and recognized California brands: Obsidian Ridge, Molnar Family and Kazmer & Blaise. Now partner in Obsidina Ridge Winery, a successful Cabernet Sauvignon wine brand from the Red Hills of California, Alex remains a winemaking consultant for a handful of independent small producers, including Trueheart Vineyard.
